For People Who Like Men

Just a little show and tell.

I pass this poster every morning as i enter my office. It hangs in an exhibit i helped to create two years ago. It never fails to brighten up my day. Pretty sweet, isn't it? Ok, i'll stop being somewhat peverted.

Real LEGO?

A few weeks i was ata party where we watching one of White Sritpes' videos - "Fell In Love With A Girl." We were discussing if the legos in the video are real or not. Here's the video and the answer to the question.

An Open Note To Trident

Dear Trident Gum,
If"Now with long lasting flavor!" means 10 minutes of any taste at all. Then yes, the stale gum i chewed today was long lasting.
Sincerely,
Petitedov

Brrrrr!

It's so cold here that when i think about the outside i get cold. It also doesn't help when the building one works in heats up to a maximum of 65 degrees.

It's Scary....

When you find yourself soothed and understood only by the music of a heroin addict with a drinking problem (who later stabbed himself in the heart).

Let It Snow, Let It Snow...(Ok, Make It Stop...Day 3)

So no work today for me. Instead of being productive like i planned i spent the whole day doing absolutely nothing, what is wrong with me? Here's a little re-cap of the none events in my day.
Woke up at 10 am - Big accomplishment, before noon.
Took a shower (hair and all) An even bigger accomplishment.
Ate oatmeal for breakfast. - Felt healthy.
Read in Discover magazine about all the useless body parts we still have. (Then stared for five minutes at my eyelids to check if i have a third one.)
Sat in front of the computer for two hours (oh look i made Dead Serious' quote of the week! hehe, oh look pointless celebrity gossip! oh how come my friends don't update their blogs more frequently?!, Defamer, random thoughts, man by blog is so lame next to all these people getting awarded...quitting this blog thing doesn't sound that bad...)
Ate (Not so healthy now.)
Watched parts of Olivier, Olivier (High brow French art flick aka good excuses not to feel guilty when you see a brother and a sister making out. )
Ate. One of the better things about living in Scotland is the discovery of Parsnips.
Went outside for five minutes and then quickly back inside. (It was still cold, duh.)
Looked at my messy room. (Thought about cleaning it, but then was lured by the evil glow of the computer.)
Tried to call a friend, phone off. (I'm feeling so loved.)
Reconsidered the whole bra post.
Ate.
Tried hoola hooping. Man that was a fun exercise. (Record was three minutes, my ten year old self would have died in shame.)
Watched Underground. (Liked the film a lot, liked the music, made me want to learn about Yugoslavian history. It is a beautiful film about the absurdity of war. Has a scene early on with a woman washing herself while a man sticks a flower into her ass and smells it. Lyrical poetry my friends, lyrical poetry.)
Theorized on the idea of cool. (Something along the lines of if you don't try to be cool you'll become cool. But then it got confusing and i couldn't decide if i was jealous of some people or just thought of them as self important heartless bastards. But that's for another post).
Changed sheets, put on a clean nighty and got ready for sleep.

Disturbing Discoveries About My Wardrobe

Warning some of the content in the post might fall into the category of too much information.

I discovered the other day that one of my bras has built in erect nipples. This disturbs on a few levels:
First it disturbs me that i didn't notice this feature when buying the bra.
Two, the thinking behind the design puzzles me. I'm all for erect nipples but honesty goes a long way with me.
Three, thinking to myself, "this is one of my favorite bras which i wear often." Thus people have probably seen me in it and observed the fake erect nipples! Oh dear.

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow (Day Two)

First an admonishment for all those bloggers who got up so ealry on this snowy Sunday morning.
(Dead Serious 6:30 am? I know Michael Moore needs to be exposed as a hypocrite but this early in the morning?)
The day began slowly as i was mesmerized by the evil contraption also know as the internet. Then i was off to shovel 2 FEET of snow. It was fun for the first five minutes and then the pain set in. I put a dent in the dirty laundry pile. That fell nice until i ended cutting my finger (lots of blood). It's a dangerous chore, be warned.
In the evening i watched on my favorites, Kar Wai Wong's Chunking Express. (This where i would write a coherent review of the film, but blogspot just ate that bit so i present to you incoherent thoughts.) The movie is about two different policemen who fall in love. The movie is filled with beautiful images and metaphors, without being too abstract to lose the balanced mood or alienate the movie goers. Tony Leung (who i can watch for hours) is great, one of my favorite scenes involves his character consoling the inanimate objects in his apartment after his girlfriend leaves him.

[To a bar of soap] "You've lost a lot of weight - you need more self-confidence!"

There's a perfect balance of heartbreak and humor. The soundtrack is flawless (actually all of Kar Wai's soundtracks are worth getting). Do i sound like i'm gushing? Good. Because i am.
Then the night ended perfectly with me reading an announcement of no work for tomorrow. I love working for a University, snow days actually apply even as an adult. So for tomorrow: more films to watch and blogs to read!

Communism Was Just A Red Herring

The best movie to be inspired by a board game has to be Clue. I saw the last part of it on Comedy Central, the one where every few minutes a black intermission card appears and says:
It could have happened this way....
Madeline Kahn is so hilarious..."The flames, flames" and Michael McKean...."They all did it. But if you wanna know who killed Mr. Boddy, I did. In the hall. With the revolver. All right, Chief, take'em away. I'm gonna go home and sleep with my wife. "

And if we are on the topic of communism i been meaning to link to a great poem by Alisa (ok i think it's a great poem no one else does).

Blogging Can Be Dangerous

So i was going to title the post Cat Got My Tongue, but i thought the chosen title was more appropriate.
I haven't been talking a lot these past few days. I had a perfect weekend in New York and came home to my reality (which isn't actually that bad) of work and soooo many things left to be finished.
At work i have felt like a zombie. The people i work with are perfectly nice people. But i have come to fear that these are the kind of people i will always work with (a little bit too earnest and sweet for their own good). I talk to them, but half the time even i am wondering to myself what i am i talking about.
In other disturbing developments i could not have a decent conversation with a few of my closest friends. I found myself nodding and getting distracted by dust instead of actually listening and responding to them.
But then the final straw came when i had a disturbing dream where i took a really nice blogger (who i read regulary) to a party and instead of me talking to my friends, i let him speak for me. The whole time i was gesturing to my friends as if to say, "See, his competent, sweet, and compassionate. So am i, he just writes better." Craziness.
I couldn't talk, blog, read, or write. It was as though someone put me on stun gun mode. I think the adjustment of living at home and finally coming to terms with some views that might not be popular with my friends is taking its toll. So i'll just take a big breath and try to start the New Year with a little bit of hope and a whole lot of whiskey.

Here's actually my favorite cat Lipa. Who is in the possesion of my tongue. Look at that thing!

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow (Day One)

Well it has now snowed about a foot here in Boston. And out of the six movies i got, i have watched two - Charlie Chaplin's City Lights and Howard Hawks' The Big Sleep. I always liked Charlie Chaplin (what's not to love?) i grew up on his genius. The tiny movements with his shoulders, the cane, the big eyes that make you realize the paradox of the adorable tramp. I've never seen the film in full, just the famous scene with the flower girl, but it's definitely worth to watch the entire masterpiece. The last scene is especially endearing and appropriate (Chaplin has said it was one of the best moments he has ever filmed). The whole movie is precisely timed and nuanced although you wouldn't get that by how smoothly it flows. That's the thing about perfectionists, it takes incredible work to make it look so easy. As to the argument of who is better Chaplin or Keaton i have to honestly admit that i haven't seen enough of Keaton to make an educated opinion, however i do think Chaplin had more heart than Keaton.
I have been meaning to see The Big Sleep for quite some time. Film Noir is one of my favorite movie genres but Bogart and Bacall have always eluded me. I have to admit that i partly took the film out because i thought it contained the famous line by Bacall,
"You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and
blow." [If that's not pure sex appeal than i don't know what is.]
Alas, the film i was thinking was To Have and Have Not (my next Bacall movie). Although this incomprehensible film does have its good zingers:

Bogart: "You've got a touch of class, but I don't know how far you can go."
Bacall: "A lot depends on who's in the saddle." (Say, hello to inuedo, old Hollywood style.)

The plot is really hard to follow (who shot who? and why? is never really resolved) the film was re-shot to make Lauren Bacall look good. Also if you decide to see it, watch for the remarks about Bogart being tall, he was known (like Tom Cruise) to be quite short for a leading man (so he wore platform shoes to make him taller than the leading ladies). Funny stuff.

While i was looking up stuff on the wonderful internet i came across this morbid site that reports the circumstances of celebrities deaths. I have a feeling the character James Leer from Wonder Boys would like this site.

Well i'm sure you all enjoyed my two cents on the movies. I'll leave you now with a video i just found of Postal Service's We Will Become Silhouettes (directed by the guy who did Napoleon Dynamite).

Spoiled

Um, you know when you wrote someone a long e-mail and it was like a week ago and you still haven't received a desired long winded and witty reply back? Ya that's how i feel right now. Write me back damn you! *

*I know how hypocrtical this post looks since my own e-mailing have dwindled down to a tiny little stream.

Highlights Of The Lost Weekend In NYC

- seeing most of the people in the NYC vicinity i enjoy reading, although not all were there (ahem, ahem, ahem)
- oreos at three am
- international market
- watching (the much anticipated by me) Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou twice and liking it much more the second time (either Wes Anderson is one creative/funny mother fucker or drinking lots of wine makes any movie experience twice as good). Favorite line: "Out here we call them pirates."
- sitting down for a chat with Esther and writersbloc, um who knew we were neighbors here and in the mother country (aswell)?!
- the yummiest Mexican food ever
- catching the birthday girl for a second
- drinking real Nana tea (and not just out of a bag)
- trying to get down with Candy Girl and failing miserably (next time i'll be showing some hip movements)
- discovering Room 18, didn't eat there but the atmosphere is worth the try
- learning about/discussing "three types of people" from Ken, Ace, and Karol
- doing a little bit of bitching about blogging
- meeting Ginger (and her very cute "friend")
- (o also forgot to mention) How awesome it was to chat it up with Yaron (and drink poorly made shots) for not one night but two!)
- seeing Mike's new do
- listening to incredible music surrounded by people who know their shit (Jessica i'll be pestering you for the CD)
- giving love advice (with a somewhat happy ending)
- quoting Napoleon Dynamite
- becoming Lisa's boyfriend (she's such a whore, first Ari then me, damn that girls gets around!)
- not going to work for three whole fucking days
- giving directions in NYC (correctly)
- light snow on a deserted New York street at 3 am in the morning
- listening to Jessica softly hum and play the guitar

If i was Winnie the Pooh

i would look like this (i am a bear after all). This picture was taken a while ago. I was visiting a friend at Vassar and you know what people do at Vassar when they are bored and have access to illegal substances? Ya well...anyway we went outside to roll on the grass (get it?!) and twirl around the beautiful trees.

(I'm officially going to hell for insinuating pot use in the same entry as Winnie the Pooh).

P.S. Can people see the beautiful tree i'm standing in front off? That's the whole connection with Pooh.

To Grandma's House I Go

"You lost weight, you look so thin." If someone other than my grandmother would have said these words i would have been delighted (maybe actually believed them). However it's hard to rely on a judgment of a woman who once told me at the age of eighteen that i was an old maid. Besides these words were said with scorn, not as a compliment. When i pointed out to my grandmother that actually I've been feeling bloated (for like a week, damn period!) and gained weight from all the crap i've been eating (the chocolate has been sending me very special messages). She frowned and offered me something to eat (chocolate or ice cream). I grated my teeth and politely refused and then answered five more times that "i was not hungry. "
Oh the joys of living in the very near vicinity of your family.

Slacker

I know there haven't been a lot of posting lately or at least anything longer than three sentences. I'm sorry, i promise to do better in the coming days. There are no excuses for my lack of posting (or writing e-mails) except my laziness. Hopefully i'll be posting a whole lot more about my stay in Scotland, New Year resolutions, daily minutiae of life, and i might even throw in a few film/book reviews (and also do my laundry, go to the gym, and achieve inner peace - it might happen!).

Sin City

Joshua has a nice post (and a few cool links) about the up coming movie Sin City. I'm actually quite intrigued by the trailer. I don't know much about comic books but (like with everything else) i do enjoy a really good one from time to time. So i'll be looking up Frank Miller soon.
