These Are Israel's Partners In Peace?

via the middle at Jewlicious which writes a great post about the palestinian plight for one state solution.

While at Jewilicious check out Michael's funny post on Israeli cinema. Favorite quote on current Israeli culture:
The modern screen Israeli is no longer the self-confident Sabra but, invariably, a shattered emotional wreck wrapped up in tattered masculinity, so conflicted he can barely get out of bed in the morning (see also Munich). This is of course not representative of the average Israeli mindset, although it may well be representative of the mindset of that certain school of Tel Avivian intellectuals and “culture” makers who can’t order a falafel without working through waves of guilt for eating an immorally culturally-appropriated Arab food.

Trailer For Oliver Stone's World Trade Center

Saturday night at the movies I snarked that the film is probably another Stone's consipiracy theory type crap blaming 9/11 on Americans (and maybe Jews disguised as Zionist).
Fortunetely I read people who are sharper than me and provide the snark better - from Patsy Bluth:
I was all braced for depictions of thousands of Jewish workers staying home, or the CIA pressing the button, or something. I'm a little worried by the tagline: "The world saw evil that day. Two men saw....something else."

If two firefighters trapped under rubble suddenly start talking about how it was like, totally America's fault for being so mean, I'm going to have a cow.
The tag line also worries me a bit and so does the involvement of Maggie Gyllenhaal. Zooey Deschanel is ten times quirkier.

Can I Nominate John Bolton?

Search for a new UN Secretary begins. I would be happy with just Bolton's mustache. Heh.

You say Potato....

One headline: Hamas security force battle gunmen in Gaza, one dead
"A new Hamas-led security force battled gunmen near the Palestinian parliament in Gaza on Monday in a fresh outbreak of internal fighting, and one civilian was killed, Palestinian security sources and medics said."

Another one: Hamas Gunmen, Palestenians Exchange Fire

"Hamas gunmen traded heavy fire with Palestinian police near the parliament building in Gaza City on Monday, killing the driver of Jordan's ambassador in Gaza and wounding three people."
So which one is it. Who is the lawful force protecting civilians and who are the thugs? Funny how the AP and Reuters can't decide and neither can palestenians. Did I say funny? I meant very, very, sad and pathetic.

Montenegro Becomes An Independent State

Great another country to learn. But seriously, congrats to the baby country.

Some Help Please

I have mentioned a few times that I have been to more funerals than weddings. Happily, the statistics in favor of weddings will slightly improve when I attend my sister's wedding in TWO weeks.

Did I mention I'm in the wedding and not only am I, the sister of the bride who is supposed to stand there and look "pretty," but I actually get to do stuff, like give a toast.

If you ever seen me give a toast you are probably laughing right now. I'm a terrible toast giver (inherited from my mother). I tend to ramble and get overly emotional, pausing every few seconds to realize I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about.

Soooo dear readers, if you have good advice for toast giving, specifically wedding toast giving, please e-mail me or leave comment.

P.S. Humor is highly appreciated.

DANCE!

Several reactions to this video:
A)Why are only gay men and Latin men capable of dancing well? Or even willing to dance without being blasted out of their minds? And no, trying to (dry)hump me in a club is NOT dancing.
B)Today's dancing trends have nothing on the twist and the moonwalk.
C)I need start taking tango classes again and maybe swing.
D)Wow, dancing trends are ridiculous...I can't wait to do some them!
E)I hate that Chambawaba song.

Update: More dance. (Not sure why it's called the Monkey Dance)

Weather

Boston's weather is going completely schizo, more than usual at least. Between bouts of rain and sun, there was also a intense lightning storm lasting for an hour with lots of wind followed by a calm sunny evening. Seriously, wtf weather? I need something stable dammit!

Save Nazanin

Via Gib.

I don't think this will make a drop of difference. It's Iran we are talking about here. But still.

Happy Place That Is Iran

Time Waster or Great Learning Tool?

You decide. So I was sad to learn that American students don't know shit about world geography. My own deep dark secret is that I too, am not great at geography. Sure I can find Iraq and I know the European continent and most of Asia, but besides Egypt, South Africa, and Cote d'Ivoire I'm pretty much lost as far as the Africa goes. So when a former colleague pointed me to the geography game I rejoiced at the learning possibilities (and lost two hours of my life). Try it, it's fun!

Oy

Please let it be untrue. 7th Heaven will probably be renewed for an eleventh season. One of the most insipid television shows ever produced. With horrible plot lines and even worse dialogue. (Besides 70 -year-old ladies) Who are you people that watch this show?!

Redefining Racism: It's All Whitey's Fault!

When I first read it I hoped it was a joke. Unfortunately it isn't. Andrew's Dad writes about Seattle Public School's Definition of Racism. Some highlights include:

*Only white people can be racist (defined "members of the agent racial group who have relatively more social power")

* some examples of "cultural racism" include "...defining white skin tones as nude or flesh colored, having a future time orientation, emphasizing individualism as opposed to a more collective ideology, defining one form of English as standard.."

You might be asking yourself what "future time orientation" means or how defining white skin as "nude"is racist. Well, I really can't help you there. I had the same reaction as Andrew's Dad:

What?!

Go read the whole thing.

Whistler Is Fast Becoming One of My Favorite Artists

I saw these landscapes this week at the Harvard Fogg Art Musuem.

(Nocturne in Grey and Gold: Chelsea Snow, 1876)

(Nocturne in Blue and Silver, c. 1871-1872)

But I started to love his portrait work a while ago when I visited the Frick Collection in NYC.

(Harmony in Pink and Grey: Portrait of Lady Meux 1881-1882)

(Symphony in Flesh Colour and Pink: Portrait of Mrs Frances Leyland 1872-1873)

Just like his landscapes, I like how moody his subjects appear without any dramtic gestures. James McNeill Whistler transmits the subjects outward grace and the inner unrest.

Prefect Imperfection

I took this photo of my grandma tonight. It's not technically great but I like it nonetheless. Let's call it impressionism-inspired and leave at that. We were celebrating her birthday and as usual I was taking lots of random photos, annoying everyone with my version of "natural" photography. (In my terms Natural photography consists of observing a great moment, fumbling for my camera, missing the said moment by a few seconds and asking the participants (to their annoyance) to recreate it.)

In other news my sister, finally, got a professional haircut in what seems like ten years. Her hair looked very pretty, here are a few shots of the lovely new specimen.

(That's my other grandma in attendance and yes that's a must have Grey Goose bottle.)

(She wasn't sure about the length, but Max and I liked very much.)

Here's a photo of my younger cousin flashing me a James Bond look (although with puffed cheecks stuffed with chicken).

Sometimes living near your family is grand.

The hope was good.....

while it lasted.

Like I predicted the US and Israel caved in to Hamas and have released "humanitarian" aid. Although who distributes this aid and to whom, and whether the aid will actually be used for food and other essentials is extremely questionable. Once again Israel has jeopardized herself all in the name of being "nice" and supposedly just.

I Did Not Like Chris/Britney Might Divorce (Yay)

So Chris was booted of the show. I'm quite happy about that. It never felt like he had much of personality. I pulling for Eliot. Am I the only one?

I'm not a big fan of Britney. But i was happy to read the news that she might have gotten some sense and might be preparing to divorce the douche she married.

(Also, I can't believe I'm posting about American Idol and Britney...the next thing you know I'll be calling myself a Republican (jk B.))

Happy (Belated) Orgasm Day!

Hope you had a good one. ;)

(This post would have been up yesterday if blogger wasn't down, [shakes fist at blogger.])

Ayaan Hirsi Ali

Yesterday, I attended a book reading/signing by Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a woman who I have come to greatly admire in the last year. When I found out she was speaking at the Coop in the afternoon and appearing at Harvard at night, I knew I had to go. (Unfortunately, when I arrived for the Harvard appearance there was no more space, although I was five minutes late!) But here are some recollections and thoughts from the afternoon.

At first when I arrived at the Coop I thought I confused the time and date. There were no signs of the reading but tucked away on the third floor there was a small group of people were gathered. It was a bit surprising being in such an intimate setting with a person I read and heard so much about. I was curious if there was going to be any antagonistic people in the crowd, but most proved to be extremely enthusiastic of the author.

The crowd was quite diverse, I saw a few men with kippas on and the woman in front of me was wearing a hijab, and there were old and young people in the audience. I also spotted John Malkovich sitting to the far right of me. I was curious to see if he was there as a fan and was happy to see him shaking his head in approval a few times, when Ms. Hirsi Ali spoke. (Of course there were multiple number of security personnel, with their ear pieces.)

I ended nodding my head quite a lot too. She's a captivating speaker, due to both her style and content. Ms. Ali Hirsi although soft spoken never gave the impression of being meek, instead she came off as knowlegeable, courageous, fiercely intelligent, and a strong believer in her message. (If I can figure how to upload audio, I made a short recording of her answering about Islam's relationship to Jews).

I'll write more on what she said in a later post (My notebook with notes is not with me at the moment.) The questions mostly focused on her interpretations of Islam. I wanted to ask her about any developments on her living situation but there wasn't enought time. (She spoke for almost an hour.)

One simple point that struck me as extremely obvious was about the Palestinian argument against "democracy." The gentlemen (in the lower left corner of the above photo) asked her if she saw democracy as problematic in fundamentalist societies, since minority rights and women rights would probably be repressed? In response she made the distinction between "majority rule" and the Western ideals of "democracy" in which individual rights are protected no matter who you are. The Palestinians, in electing Hamas, did not so much practice democracy as superficial democracy. The citizens who elected Hamas are not free to criticize openly Hamas and exercise other rights that are basic in a Western society.

Here's a photo of an elderly women getting her book signed and telling the author how "lovely" and "beautiful" she is. I found the moment charming.

PS, I started reading her book The Caged Virgin and it's as lucid and compelling as her speaking style. I highly recommend it.

How Cute Is Bush?

via Gib's most awesome post on the recent letter from Iran.

I know some people who occasionally read me are not great fans of Bush but this is too cute.

Stupidest Thing I Heard On The Radio (Yesterday)

First of all let me preface this by saying, there are people in this world who love animals and then there are deranged people who love animals. I don't understand news organization or the public for that matter taking the later group seriously. So yesterday when I was listening to a BBC radio report about the rise in animal right terrorism (a group using intimidation tactics to put pressure on stock holders to sell their stock in a company who tests on animals) and (finally) a push back by the scientists (and other sane, reality based people); one of the "animal rights" group members being interviewed came up with this doozy:

"If a human or animal were stuck in a burning building, I would always save the animal first."

It seems that when your rights are secured and you live at a certain level of comfort, it is better to focus on "helpless" animals rather than to actually realize there is much more to be done in the "human world." No wonder so many celebrities are ardent about animal rights.

My Life: An Anecdotal Explanation

Driving in my car I thought to myself, "I haven't been in a car accident in a while. Maybe my insurance rates will go down this year...." Only to, minutes later, slam on my breaks almost crashing into a truck in front of me which suddenly stopped.
