Brian: "You have to be different." The Crowd: "Yes, we are all different!" Small lonely Voice: "I'm not different."

Status Change
So this whole having a husband thing is so much different than having a boyfriend. Like super different. If you ask why or how, I would not be able to say. It just is. Different in the most wonderful way. I'm so happy Peter and I did this. And while I'm still adjusting to the Mrs. part, the leaving behind of my last name feels effortless (especially since it's gazillion letters long).
Quote of the Day
Made me think of a not too recent restaurant experience:
I've been giving Yelp a try. It's a nice way to record some things you observe and also vent. However, most of my reviews have been positive.... so no much venting going, as much as just wanting to show off I know some good spots and I can say succinctly without giving my life story at the same time (pet peeve of mine & others I know).
There's an old joke - um... two elderly women are at a Catskill mountain resort, and one of 'em says, "Boy, the food at this place is really terrible." The other one says, "Yeah, I know; and such small portions." Well, that's essentially how I feel about life - full of loneliness, and misery, and suffering, and unhappiness, and it's all over much too quickly- Annie Hall

Marriage Philosophy Explained in Rings
I complained to our jeweler that my ring was too loose.
My (now) husband complained that his ring is too tight.
Our rings are quite nice and look well on us. Now my husband wonders if his ring is too big and I wonder about the summer when my fingers will swell up. Lesson: listen to the experts.
(Tip for men: always get the ring a smaller size than you think you need. Too many men lose their rings while washing their hands, according to the jeweler's we went to.)

On Life & Love
When I was a kid, new to America, I read three kinds of books: historical (mostly about the Holocaust, I was slightly obsessed), the classics, and biographies. I loved reading about old movie stars, like Fred Astaire, or writers I admired.
Reading over this old post about my heroes reminded me of two things: One, I wish Yaron would write at Daily Lunch again, he's funny. Two, I really love George Burns. I don't remember much about George Burns life - but I remember that he was happy, grew up from a poor Jewish family, broke into show business, and that he loved his wife Gracie dearly. That makes him a hero in my book.
Sometimes I think that love doesn't exist anymore. Amid the horrible divorces and back stabbing. This loyal, unwavering love is just for sappy romantic comedies. And then I think of George Burns and his love for his Gracie. And then I think of my love and I know it does.

Positivity Is A Great Thing...
especially when things are working out. When they are not, it's a lot tougher. A lot.
A Fashion Observation
The best outfits I come up with are right after I do laundry and right before I need to do laundry. Necessity of not going out naked seems to inspire an inner creative fashion maven.
Solution!
These kind of commercials always make the subject they are tackling so real and poignant.
I love, love all the clips of Portlandia I've seen. The satirizing of hipsters is so spot on.

Song of the Day
I love this video. I've been listening to old cds mixes in the car. Basically, the only thing that made me happy today, besides getting my marriage certificate, is singing at my loudest in the car traveling at 80 mph on the highway.

Random Music Thought
I decided that I don't like listening to Leonard Cohen during the day. Especially if it's sunny. His music goes down easier at night.
I've never been a huge fan of the song Suzanne, it's alright but not as good as Lenny's other songs. One line there always strikes me as totally of the time "And she feeds you tea and oranges / that come all the way from China" - it sounded so exotic at the time. Now it sounds kind of depressive and slightly menacing. Like are those oranges safe to eat? Maybe they are poisned. China was exciting and sexy back in the 60's.

Local Bad Guy
You know who is not going to be the terrorist in the crime drama that I watch? (I watch a lot Bones, Lie to Me, Castle, NCIS. Although listen, rather than watch, is more accurate, because while I do mind numbing reports the shows play in the background.)
Well it's sure isn't going to be the hard working, devote Muslim immigrant who is suspected at first. Most likely it will be a white guy, with a chip to grind with the US government. Also, somewhere in the middle we will know how hard the guy has been working in America, how much they love America and can't wait to be/love being a US citizen, and how frustrated he gets with all the profiling and hate of the American society.
I don't mind that the bad guy is not a Muslim extremist, why should that be, (although never having a Muslim be terrorist also grinds my teeth - see 9/11 Attack, Ft. Hood shooting, or the killing of 2 US soldiers this week). What I do mind, is when usually the Muslim guy start pontificating about how wonderful and peaceful Islam is. Letting us, the stupid American(?) viewers know all about the wonderful history of Islam. It's an assumption on the part of the producers, writers, - whoever decides now we will have five minute of teaching those idiots on how awesome and normal Islam is. Funny but I never hear pontification of a Catholic guy, who just heard a reference to Catholic priest abusing boys, go into a long winded speech about the love that Jesus and thus his Representative on earth - the Pope - is spreading through Catholicism - and those priests were a singularity rather than the rule.
Interesting how that works.

On Manicures
Surprisingly, for someone who's mother is a manicurist, I rarely get manicures. In fact I often get chided for my neglect of my nails from my mom. However, on the rare occasion that I actually do get a manicure I suddenly feel like a sophisticated woman, an adult. I can be that lady in the bank photo, with a closeup of her manicured hands signing a check, that is if I ever wrote a check (I'm more of a credit card/debit card kind of girl)! Or something. Anyhoo, manicures are great and men don't know what they are missing.
Collective Bargaining Explained
Basically when you have someone else money it's easy to "spend it" or give it away! People who pay the taxes don't get represented but people who get paid by the government do. Interesting how that works.
P.S. If people want to raise taxes, then they can pay higher taxes themselves. No need to impose the opinion of the rest of us. You want higher taxes? There is no law that says you can't pay more to the IRS than you already do.

Resolved
Decided to listen to Leonard Cohen only at night. The sunlight diminishes the poetry of his music.
Purpose in Passion
I only heard a snippet of the interview of Grant Achatz, chef behind Alinea. It's fascinating to me his approach and thought on food. I've only heard of him through kottke.org before, when he linked to the website of his newest (soon to be open) restaurant Next.
I love of the idea of taking something as mundane and ordinary as eating and turning into art. The way Chef Achatz thinks about food is inspiring. Sometimes life can seem tasteless (no pun intended) - completely without rhyme or reason - and then you learn about people like Achatz and I realize how incredibly amazing it is to be alive. To have such a passion and to make others experience it is a pretty amazing accomplishment.
