the political climate

At the moment my political thoughts are a bit fuzzy, i used to think i'm a Democrat. Now i tend to agree with some of the Republican platform. So i guess the best way to think of myself is an independent - deciding on the candidate and not on the party platform. Saying all that - i have increasingly sensitive to people bashing Republicans - since a lot of my friends are Republicans - and i don't think of them as evil, corrupt, heartless people.
So today in my English Lit. 2 class when my (Scottish) Professor lectured us on the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution - he said some rather bizarre things that made a wee bit annoyed. One: he read off a comment by Benjamin Franklin about the inevitability of our country (USA) to sooner or later succumb to despotism - brought on by human greed. A comment he justified by pointing out the state of America now. And then later in talking about what Jefferson remarking he was a Republican - but, don't worry, not that kind of Republican - expecting people to laugh.
It's as though it was perfectly clear to him, America is unwinding and the current Republicans could never be associated with such an enlightened man as Thomas Jefferson.
And then this morning when talking about the weirdness of being in a country where the Royal family is still relevant - another Professor tells me that Americans are no better since we have our own monarchy - the Bushes - and then proceeds to tell he likes Boston (the lovely city i live in) because it's so "liberal."
